Safer Cosmetics…Do you know what’s in your cosmetics
Surprise, surprise: the big cosmetics companies aren’t such big fans of the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010—legislation introduced yesterday to more strictly regulate their business—or of our new movie. The Personal Care Products Council went so far as to issue a statement calling The Story of Cosmetics a “repugnant and absurd…shockumentary.” Whoa!

A Frontline Report on Pro-Lifers in Atlanta
Staying on our side of the street as they dis-embarked, we started chanting, “Trust Black Women” as loudly as we could, holding up signs that read “You Can’t Steal Civil Rights” and “Women’s Rights are Human Rights.” Paris Hatcher and Tonya Williams from SPARK, and Heidi Williamson of SisterSong, led the rally with spirit and energy that really excited our side and kept everyone engaged and having fun.
The California Safe Cosmetics Act of 2005
Impetus for the law stems from consumers’ concerns over long-term exposure to certain cosmetic ingredients. Cosmetic use has not been linked to chronic illnesses, but some products do contain carcinogens (such as formaldehyde, used in nail treatments), teratogens (such as lead acetate, used in two hair dyes), and other reproductive toxicants (such as di-n-butyl phthalate, used in nail treatments and dandruff shampoos).

In the letter to Gov. Schwarzenegger, Californians for a Healthy and Green Economy (CHANGE), a statewide coalition that has been monitoring the development of the regulations, says the lack of transparency and public oversight "unfairly stack the deck in favor of industry, which will have far greater opportunity to influence, delay or appeal the Department's decision."
