Black Women for Wellness ‘deeply concerned’ over passage of Pence Amendment

Los Angeles, CA – February 22, 2011: Black Women for Wellness (BWW), a multi-generational organization committed to the well-being of Black women and girls, is deeply concerned by the U.S. House of Representatives passing of the “Pence Amendment” (Amendment 11), offered by Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) as an amendment to the federal spending bill, on Friday, February 18, 2011. BWW believes this amendment is dangerous to women of color, our families and communities because it would deny any Title X funding to all reproductive health organizations that provide abortions. Reproductive health organizations, hospitals and small community clinics that provide HIV prevention services, STI testing, breast and cervical screening and also preventive care for teenagers have become a casualty in this latest round of what can only be called a war on women.
